Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation; SPK

Introduction:

Long-term diabetes (either type 1 or type 2) often causes kidney failure, eventually requiring dialysis (peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis). Simultaneous Pancreatic and Kidney (SPK) transplantation can y solve the causes and results of this disease. Over 25,000 pancreas transplantations have been performed in the world and over the past 20 years. So SPK Transplantation has been validated, which can effectively treat diabetic end renal disease. Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital is the first and only medical center qualified for pancreas transplantation in central and southern Taiwan. Under the leadership of Prof. Kuo Kung-kai and Prof. Wang Sen-Ren from Division of General and Digestive Surgery, the Pancreas and Kidney Transplant Team has integrated inter-departmental resources in KMU hospital and provided patients with complete and persistent medical care.

If only kidney without pancreas was transplanted, according to the recent study showed that about two years after transplantation, the kidney graft began to have somewhat diabetic nephropathy changes. While patents received SPK transplantation could have better control in the blood sugar, which would protect the kidney graft. SPK patients took the same type and dosage of immune-suppressant regimen as kidney transplantation alone. So patients with diabetic nephropathy, SPK transplantation is the best choice. SPK can also improve dyslipidemia, diabetic neuropathy, and early retinopathy.

Services and Advantages:

Pancreatic transplantation can be divided into three categories: (a) Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK). (B) pancreas after kidney transplantation (Pancreas after kidney; PAK). (C) simple pancreas transplantation (Pancreas transplantation alone; PTA). SPK transplantation accounted for the most popular procedure (about 80%). SPK transplantation can solve the causes and results of diabetic nephropathy.

They no longer require peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis, no longer need to measure daily blood glucose or insulin injection.  “Quality of life” can be greatly improved. They can eat food as their wishes and drink without water restrictions. So SPK is the best choice for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.
